There are many ways to write a song. There's a few ways that are probably the most common. Some people get music first, some get the lyrics first, and some get both at the same time. There's no right or wrong way, just whatever works for you. I can only write in a way that it comes to me. Sometimes I get one or the other, and other times they come all at once like a landslide. Often I start out with a phrase that grabs me musically and lyrically. It occurs in a zen-like state when you are precariously, but simultaneously tuned-in to both frequencies (words and music) and the slightest thing could cause it all to vanish. The whole process is magic to me. I don't really get it. I do find however, that if I set out to write a song about a particular subject, that song will never be finished. I have only sat down to write with a specific intention and had it work out twice. Hopefully, you all will hear them soon.
Also, when it rains it pours. I always start out with one song and as I try different changes, I find stuff that I like, but doesn't suit the current tune. Those fragments always turn into another song, sometimes better than the original idea. Sometimes the fragments string themselves together into a complete song and the original is still a work in progress. It's crazy. I can't explain why, it just is.
That's just a slice of the pie. Until next time. . .
